There are some other Splunk-ternatives like Elastic and Gravwell, I'd check those out. They aim themselves at beating Splunk on features and price.

Splunk is just a log aggregator with programmable search functions which allows one to create dashboards to make sense of the logged data.
it doesn't really collect anything from anywhere. I supposed one could use SNMP Get. to collet data from network devices, and put into Splunk  Splunk charges by the log volume, and Cisco Thousand Eyes isn't cheap either, the Fed team, where i am has been trying to setup Thousand Eyes for months.

Looking for an open source component to collect telemetry from network devices + everywhere. Does it exist? Seems like I need separate systems for network and then OS-based and container based.

Splunk does a free 14 day trial, might check it out but wanted something I could play with more long term.

THE MUSEUM OF FORUM FAIL / IP Address Abuse: What To Do W...

As per the reports of many research groups, cyberattacks reached their peak in the year 2021. It is not uncommon for large businesses to face numerous hacking attempts in the same week. How can businesses tackle these attacks? what can be done if you have become a victim of IP address abuse?

What can be done when one falls victim to IP address abuse? The three most relevant measures to take are outlined below.
• First off, remember to check your logs. Everything you wish to know will be present in your network logs. From the logs, you can find the IP address that you think is causing all the issues.
• Make use of an IP lookup tool to collect all the available details about the specific IP address that was used to attack you. In most cases, an IP address can have an email address linked to it. Hurriedly track down the email address.
• Report the IP address attack to the email address. Make sure to provide all the details and keep track of the damage precisely.

You need to keep in mind that the person who attacked you may have disguised or faked their IP address. In such a scenario, the owner of the email address that you have found can be innocent. The person can be a victim and may not know that their IP address is being used by fraudsters to hurt other people.

If everything goes well, the owner of the IPv4 addresses will thank you for alerting them about the misuse of their IP address. They can check their logs and find the real culprit behind the IP address abuse. Once they confirm the details of the culprit, feel free to take the appropriate course of action.

See this is what I do when on call,  make up songs like this

Sung to the tune 100 bottles of beer on the wall

168 hours of on call to go, 168 hours of on call.
you mark it down, sit around, 167 hours of on call to go.

167 hours of on call to go, 167 hours of on call.
you mark it down, sit around, 166 hours of on call to go.

166 hours of on call to go, 166 hours of on call.
you mark it down, sit around, 165 hours of on call to go.

I don't do social media. I have a LinkedIn which I keep updated, but don't use very often. My wife on the other hand is really involved in it. She acts as the social media manager for two or three non profits she is involved with as well as her own. She is constantly having to deal with scams, bots, and impersonation. Seeing her have to deal with all that is enough for me to just stay away. Also being in cyber security makes me paranoid in sharing anything anywhere.

Since I do radio shows, I keep an open door for most friends on FB, so I have to stay aware.

Tonight, I got hit with a pitch to invest in crypto. Bingo!

Good thing for me, I don't discuss investments online with strangers!
