Got three to sit through, one today, two tomorrow. One of these guys will manage a LAN service for us.

Sadly, neither swag nor lunch is on tap here. We have to judge them entirely upon their own merits.

It was very interesting in that this was my first time to do this.

We're looking to see what service they're willing to provide us at a given price point. Most important, can they provide the service? If not, price doesn't matter. If yes, theeeeeeen we talk money. There's the price per resource and stuff like that, but also ramp-up costs, training, reduction in cost with efficiencies, stuff like that. There's also a discussion of how tickets will escalate back to me from the L1/L2/L3 guys and making sure that they can handle most of the escalations with staff on hand.

For commonly available services, it's not too hard finding staff for support. This is for a niche service for a product from a vendor that does not start with C and rhymes with "shmisco", so it's niche niche - staffing is a concern. This is where people hesitate at other vendors - are we going to be able to find people to support this? Is it easy enough to train them up on the product? If not, what about going with the competition?

Now comes the reference checking. This is where we find out if the guys they thought were their best customers are better customers than the other guys' customers...
