I have a bunch of systems that you can only manage them by physically plugging in a keyboard and monitor. I want to repurpose these for other projects and would be a lot faster if I could do all this from my desk. With Cisco servers we have it's easy because I just web browse to the kvm portals and boot up / shut down / manage them that way.

Has anyone had any experience with anything like this PCI card or have any suggestions to turn a regular desktop-like system into one that you can control remotely?
One of my systems is a dell rack mounted 1RU server. I dont think this PCI card will fit but my other systems it will :)

What goes into the RJ45 plug? An IP network or some other KVM device?
My previous employer had Adderlink KVMs that were reachable over IP, but they are standalone boxes, not built-in PCI cards.

We have a few racks that use these. Ours just use a cat5 cable to connect to a switch box, not an IP network. Makes for easy cable routing vs VGA+USB/PS2.

I can't find a conclusive answer: can these devices be used with just an ethernet connection from the dongle, or do you need to connect each dongle to a special ATEN box?

i doubt if it works, if it does, it doubt it will be reliable. Based on the assumption that most mouse, kvm and display drivers are writen (be it a BIOS or OS driver) to interact iwth their dedicated PS/2 USB or VGA ports. To send those peripheral signals in RJ45 IP format, I think serious hacking is needed in those drivers.
Years ago, I worked with another vendor called amulet hotkey, their device has an conventional ps/2 and vga interface that plugs into the PC system then other end there is their own terminal box which will convert all these signals into TCP/IP format and send it over IP network.

similar to KVM swithhes only in that it has additional nice addition of being able to send the KVM over Ethernet.
i also had a need to remotely power up the PC systems at home (doing crypto mining) and needed to power up the client PC moherboard at will since they dont have a BMC.
Webrelay switches came to rescue and ordered one with 4 connectors and just arrived. I did partial setup yesterday and it was neat. Just connect the rj4 to local network and power up. (it even came with the screwdriver to secure the cables!) and default ip o monitor/on/off the devices.

Sure there is a possibility of using wake-on-lan and RTC but decided not to power.
