In the March 24, 2020 Ask The Headhunter Newsletter a student accepts a job offer, then gets more interviews and a better offer. What now? Renege on the first offer? Question I am in deep turmoil right now. For quite a while I was not getting any calls let alone interviews. About a month ago I got interviews with three companies. Company A made an offer and Company B made an offer later in the week. I didn't hear anything back from Company C. Out of fear of losing my first real offer, I quickly accepted Company A. Company B's

The setup in this article gets complicated when companies D and E show up... My advice is to not apply anywhere you don't want to work. If times are desperate, you'll increase the range of "where you want to work" fits. If not, then you don't bother. In my last job search, I really only wanted to work at one place, so I applied there. I was curious about another location and applied there as a comparison. I got an offer from both, but I knew where my heart was, and that's where I am now.

I had a friend that decided last minute to turn down a job offer. As in Friday afternoon before her Monday start. This was for a job with a different company that has their office in the same building we are in. The direct manager wasn't happy with her, but HR didn't care. They just moved on to start interviews again. She asked, and they said she is even eligible for hire if she applies again for something else. One of her almost coworkers even gave her the name tag that got made for her office. She now uses that to "threaten" her boss she could leave if she wanted to (all in good fun).

i'd say, in the old days one would sleep in the grave they dug, these days with at-will employment, all's fair, unless a company boxter was part of the deal.

I have learned to have 0 employer loyalty. Always make the decision that is best for you and your career. The reality is if the shoe is on the other foot and an employer has to make a "business decision" they will do it without hesitation.
