Title: 31 July 2015 Weekend Thread (early edition)
Post by: deanwebb on July 30, 2015, 12:44:47 PM
My PTO starts tomorrow, so my 17-day weekend starts when I log off the work VPN. SCHWEET.

Going to do a 3000-mile road trip across the western USA. Gonna see a lot of country and do a lot of fancy drivin'.

Sounds cool.  If you're going to be in the San Diego area let's get together for food/drink.

Have fun Dean!!  I just did a 3,000+ mile trip the week before 4th of July. It was great but that last day of driving was a complete bore.

I'm hoping my new/old CPU arrives from eBay so I can test out my motherboard and finish my server build. I've got some storage projects for the garage that I need to get completed so that just may be my weekend. Date night with the GF on Friday. Other than that we will be laying low and enjoying the weekend.

Any UConnect finally got me my upgrade but no one did anything to make my VIN work so it must be the magic. So I'll be upgrading my trucks system today, tomorrow, or this weekend depending on time. I believe my truck is on ver. 13 and the upgrade is ver. 15 so I'm expecting something cool out of this like BGP or IPv6...maybe I'm aiming to high though.

You're in for a treat. Western Nebraska is the most amazing drive you will ever have. I really enjoy Omaha and Lincoln though. I've been in the area since 2009

Haha I'm ok with them once in awhile. Sometimes they come out with special ones like Jalapeno PepperJack. They're definitely a favorite around here. During winter they have Temperature Tuesdays's, the temp at 8am or something like that is the price of a Runza when you buy fries and a drink. So on days that it is -10 there is a positive.

Well, we hauled all the way across Nebraska, Omaha to Henry, and then on up to Casper, WY. 667 miles. Woof!

But I did get to drive along the stretch of trail where my ancestors walked and parked in a spot where my great-great-great-grandfather passed away while crossing the plains.

Driving to Salt Lake City tomorrow.

I always liked road trips but haven't done one in a while. No way in hell am I driving 1000+ miles with a 6 year old and a 4 year old in the car lol. Maybe when they are older.

Enjoy the trip! Must be nice to have a 17-day weekend. :)

It is nice. Great way to spend my PTO. Our company has a use it or lose it approach, so I'mma using it. Wife is around my age, daughter is 13, all my other kids are growned and out of the house. Which is good, since that means at least one of them can house-sit and tend to the cats while we're gone.

I really enjoyed the trip into Salt Lake City. You're in for a scenic drive. You can also stop and see the salt flats on your way too.   :joy:

Came in by way of Provo Canyon. That is one amazing drive. Utah has seriously got some of the best stretches of road to drive on in the USA.

Now it's time to clean the bugs off the windshield and do some city driving until Monday next week, when we head on to Grand Junction, CO. That drive will include a detour to Moab so we can drive the Colorado River road from there to Grand Junction and then the excellent drive through Colorado National Monument.

I worked in Grand Junction, CO a long time ago in my early Desktop/Networking support days.  I worked my ass off at a job site for 4 days there doing desktop/routing/switching upgrades so I could take off in the rental car and drive from there to Montrose, Ouray, and finally Telluride.  I was going to do just a 1/2 day of skiing at Telluride but it ended up taking a long longer to get there than I expected by car and it was more expensive that I had thought to ski for 1/2 day.  I walked around and ate and really enjoyed the view.  Some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen, especially the mesa and canyons in the Colorado National Monument.  I really contemplated moving to Colorado in my younger days.

Of note, apparently Ralph Lauren has a ranch on the way to Telluride (I think it might be the Double RL Ranch).  On my way to Telluride I was passed by a Bugatti Veyron with a license plate of RL.  I saw years later that Ralph Lauren has quite an extensive array of collector cars.  I always wondered if that was him driving it that day.

In Amarillo now... US 50 in Colorado is an AMAZING drive. Best along the rivers - I nearly cooked my brakes coming down from Monarch Pass, elevation 11,312.

Home again tomorrow afternoon and PTO "recovery days" on Thursday and Friday. Yay!

Did not see the big EPA spill.

Just had Tex-Mex for supper. Oh man, I'm home.
