Well my company just had a massive set of firings yesterday. All the layoffs before were performance based and those are fine, I can survive any performance based layoffs ever. The ones yesterday were "we need to fire X people in X departments, I don't give a shit who". We lost one of our best windows admins because he was in a certain department and kept ones who can't find their backside with both hands cause they were in a different area.
:jackie-chan:
(one of the firings was an asshole move so large I don't think I am willing to put it on a public forum)
I think I'll try the Raleigh-Durham area. (I need to stay on the east cost as my in-laws are quite old.) So if anyone knows of anything in the Raleigh-Durham area please let me know.
Arbitrary and irresponsible are the two words that immediately come to mind.
I have a ton of defense sector recruiters on my Linked-in. If you want access to my network say the word.
I've found Indeed to be a good resource. Even though a company many not post directly with Indeed they still advertise the job. And once you do a search it remembers it. So tomorrow when you open the app it will tell you how many new jobs match that search. Pretty sweet for quick and free. Had an HR guy tell me that it's a win-win because they don't ask for anything, they scour job postings on the web, and then re-post them with a link to the original.
PM me, I've got a guy looking in R-D for some network talent.
You don't work for HP, do you?
Ouch dude, sorry to hear that.
If you drop a line on Twitter and or LinkedIn Ill push it out to my contacts.
Lots of current work people on Linked in so I don't want to advertise it out that way right now that way sadly
Don't work at HP
Dean I sent you an e-mail at the e-mail listed in your profile
Yep, I'll hook you up with the contact once I get home. For some reason, I can't get to LinkedIn on my work PC...
If you're in Melbourne Australia lol my mob are desperate for more wireless and security chops. Talk some sdn for instant win lol
Nope, central Virginia USA
I suppose you're not willing to move to Europe either :)
I don't want to move to Texas because of my in-laws, so nope not interested in Europe

I didn't even want to go to SC (Have a friend in Charleston who has R/S jobs open)
So I am assuming Las Vegas is out. Good luck on the search.

that's pretty harsh LOL. I wouldn't move from Melbourne unless it was a ridiculous offer, and we're not exactly a hive of IT activity.
I have worked on systems in Melbourne before
OK, so I did a phone interview today just for grins, and the guys asking the questions sounded like they pretty much phone it in every day. I did some research, and the company is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, and has been for about 5-6 years. The whole thing reminded me of Kruger Industrial Smoothing from Seinfeld.

This job might be a shorter drive to work and a little more money, but I don't want to be George Costanza. Also, they don't allow remote working and they have an "open floorplan" office, which means they're too cheap to buy cubes and the noise is terrible. Thumbs very down and I love my job even more after interviewing there.
Well.. judging by the responses here I know where I will post when I'm done contracting in the Middle East and looking to make a move
Any luck dlots?

I have learned through trial and error that a little due diligence helps avoid situations like that. Good on you for doing the research. Yo mama didn't raise no fool.
I have an interview today at 11:00 with Cisco for a security position I doubt I am qualified for, and one tomorrow (I think) for a GE contractor.

Security is pretty hot stuff, go in with confidence. Tell the truth, be positive, and you might get an offer that you doubt you'll be qualified for.

Truth..... when I think back I'm still shocked that I almost didn't pursue the job I'm in now because I didn't feel like I was qualified, and never imagined I'd be making what I'm making without a CCIE. Just go for it and be honest like Dean said... the worst that can happen is you're told no and you just move on with your life.

..and you get interview practice to hone those interview skills. it's always taken me 3 or 4 to get back in the groove.
I received a call today with good news. They've got to get the letter finalized and sent over so I don't know all details yet. But if all goes well and I like what I see next week my coffee cup, USB missile launcher, and I will be somewhere else November 9th. Fluffy rabbits for everyone
NICE!!
I didn't get the job, or even make it to the next round: they wanted someone with Fire-Power and ISE experience. You think they wouldn't have called me since I told them I didn't have XP with either of those, but I am always happy to practice my interviewing skills.

I really hate that.
- they knew up front you didn't have that exact XP, why did they waste anyone's time
- I bet majority of people with that XP already work for Cisco - they're both relatively new, anyone from Enterprise with that XP would only know their company's specific setup anyway - what's the issue in hiring someone with existing IPS/NAC XP and training up?

Sounds like they are chasing the ol' purple squirrel.
Dude drop me an DM or email with your strong areas, what you want to do and your radius to move.

Yeah.... that's some B.S. right there... it's like folks wanting Nexus experience when it was new and there was no way to train on it. People need to be a little more realistic (Especially around hiring a "personality" rather than a skill set - they can be trained as winter mentioned)

Gotta keep our intern in line
I had another call that went REALLY well, in-fact the manager said he was going to bring me in for an in-person interview pretty much no matter what the technical people said.
Might not have to move, lots of remote work, and a $14K raise.
ran across this site today, might be interesting to check out..
https://www.skillgigs.com/
it's a job auction site were employers bid for you to fill their positions.

Dlots,
You have posted multiple times about your job situation in the past. I really think (from an outside party perspective) that you need to move on. It is in the best interest for you. Besides nothing re-sparks the love for technology like a clean slate elsewhere.
when he says he might not have to move, I think he means move LOCATION, he's still going for a new job....
Yeah I am looking for a new job, the current one is just to unstable.
The interview I had went quite badly, they had me use a vacation day and drive 3 hours to their location to do an interview... where I sat in the office and talked with people over the phone. I found out that the lvl 3 network engineer position is basically updating ACLs and crap work, such as:
Cleaning projector filters.
Moving phone extensions (for their PBX).
Doing punch-down blocks .
Possibility of working on the windows XP machines.
Not designing their new wireless system (they have contractors for that stuff) but doing heat-maps, and trouble shooting it.
Working in the most soul sucking environment I have ever seen in my life.
And all CCIEs have to move to their home office.
So I think I am passing on this job and keeping an eye out for others.
That's not level 3, that's "The IT Guy" for a small business.
Ugh! Don't you hate that sort of thing. I had almost the exact same thing (minus I don't have a CCIE lol) happen to me last year. Sometimes you almost feel like an employer is pulling a "bait and switch" on you lol.
