Title: Study Music
Post by: deanwebb on November 25, 2015, 06:24:47 PM
My latest discoveries:

The "8 hour study mix - Trance" on YouTube. It's basically, uh, eight hours of, uh... trance... to, uh, um, study, uh... to...

Really good mix of non-vocal trance music and, yes, I did study to it.

But I also studied to the tunes of the great stoner rock band Wo Fat. Got all their albums, but "The Black Code" is my fave of theirs. I like it for review, labbing, and when I have to drown out the consultants while I actually get crap done at work. Loud, droning, crunchy, fuzzy, chunky chords make for great way to do network security.

Some trance I think is like modern day classical music. Other trance is utter shite. I go to the podcasts:

http://www.aboveandbeyond.nu/abgt
http://ms54.com/podcasts/
http://oakenfold.libsyn.com/ <- this guy is a local to me from England, although this isn't trance
http://tiesto.com/podcasts/
https://djpod.com/corstenscountdown
http://fsoe-recordings.com/fsoepodcast/fsoepod.xml
http://www.galexmusic.com/podcast/gareth.xml

although not listened to much of these lately, usually only when I fly.

I make it a point to see Above & Beyond whenever they're in SoCal. It's always worth it. Tiësto live has been hit or miss for me, but I always enjoy his club life podcasts. Oops forgot this is a study thread...

Dude, if you can study at a live show, we'd like to know about that.

Have you guys checked out Mixcloud?   I DJ as a hobby and found out about this from a DJ blog and is the primary source I get my music from.  Ton of good stuff there.

Brixton is literally a 15 minute drive on almost one road from where I'm from in England. A&B are there quite a bit, I've never managed to go :(
Gareth Emery was at a festival here in Aus on Sunday, I don't rate him anymore.

Yea mixcloud seems to be replacing soundcloud since soundcloud messed up 99% of their users including paying customers. Grant Nelson said on his Facebook that soundcloud even removed his original works from there citing copywright!  :wall:

I've been meaning to do a mix and upload it to mixcloud for ages... will try and sort it out this weekend.

What decks do you have? I have Pioneer 900 Nexus, you can link them to your laptop to connect to your music in Rekordbox application. I tried to work out how the network side of things works on the decks so that I could connect to the decks wirelessly through my existing network. I couldn't get it to work after I had figured out some things. This was last year, though. From what I remember, the decks do an auto configure of their IP addresses in the range 169.254.x.x so if you have them on a VLAN where your laptop also uses that address then it should work. I dont think they speak DHCP and so can't be DHCP'd.
I dunno why it wouldn't work tho. I didn't do any packet capturing with wireshark. I may have been routing between the LAN and WIFI networks so may be their TTL is 1 already.

Not a fan of trance but I do enjoy some rock with no singing... check out Pelican or Russian Circles ;)

For me, that's the biggest fun with stoner rock. Not a lot of vocals, and the bands I like have singers that blend well with the music. Vocals can kill a good study session for me, unless they fade out quickly and let the instruments take over, or if they're part of a mantra-like repetition.

Midival Punditz from India feature a lot of great mantra vocals in their work. "Ali" is one of my favorites of theirs.

I use a Traktor Kontrol S2 Mk2 with my iPad using Traktor DJ.  Works very well for my needs (mostly recreational).  Just enough effects and fun stuff without it being overly complicated that I have to make it a full-time job just to learn how to use it, you know? ;)

EDIT - Oh! It's also very light and portable.  On hot days I usually take it and a Beatbox out to the community pool - let the kids go play and play some tunes for the community. I enjoy it. :)

Don't let's forget another cool study music maker: Chris Joss.

His stuff has been used on "Better Call Saul" and other fine soundtracks because of his cool acid jazz stylings. If you liked the slick "Music to Rob the Bellagio to" from "Ocean's Eleven", you'll love this guy's stuff. When I put this stuff on, suddenly I look like Brad Pitt in an Armani suit as multiple camera angles cover how I'm planning out the way I'm going to type "shut / no shut" on an interface.

https://www.youtube.com/user/ChrisJoss2/playlists

"You've Been Spiked" and "Sticks" are great places to start. "Sticks" has the "Better Call Saul" track, "Tune Down."  8)

Oh mah gerd - I couldn't study and listen to that... to many changes in volume and sound - my ADD would go nuts.

Well, then you should use them to keep you awake during long drives and sales presentations.

I think Deanwebb needs to dig into some Les Claypool... :joy:

OK, Les Claypool is DEFINITELY not the good music to study to. It is a little... how you say... eccentric?

Primus and Les Claypool can keep me awake all night long, whether I like it or not.

Infernal Machina can do that job, as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXSAljF5eKY

100% guaranteed to mess up your study session, but that bass player got his start in the French band Magma back in the early 1970s, and listening to those recordings, I can't help but wonder if a young Les Claypool wasn't listening to them, as well. Lots of interesting similarities between Magma and Primus...

My new standard radio station at the office: http://somafm.com/cliqhop/index.html

Sometimes one track can get too glitchy but nice laid-back melodic tunes. Lots of Aphex, Boards of Canada, Autechre, ...

Meanwhile, I'm all the way over on the other side of the analog/digital spectrum: https://ozonemama.bandcamp.com/album/sonic-glory

Hell yeah! Start off with the first track and get in a time machine back to 1975.

I'm doing a lot of stoner fuzz rock these days. I skip over the stuff that's just noodling away and latch on to bands that know how to write riffs with great hooks.

More gravediggin'

I'm reviewing for a test I'm about to take and this stuff is the JAM. Camerounian disco-funk is pretty awesome...
