Title: What Do You Look For In An Intern?
Post by: dipenshah on February 06, 2016, 03:48:04 PM
Hi All,

As I said in my intro, I am a Master's student in Telecommunication Technology and I want to make a career in Networking. From that perspective being in first year (Grad) I am currently looking for an Internship/Co-op opportunity.

A brief about me: I worked in India as a Senior Account Manager with almost 2 years of experience in Operations - Mobile Advertising domain for AdMarvel (OperaMediaWorks Project) where we helped Mobile Advertisers and Publishers maximize their revenues. I came to US to pursue my Master's in Telecom @RIT. I learnt about Networking and Optical Fiber technologies in college (Fall 2015).

Also, I have tried to acquire many skills during my winter break viz. Networking concepts (CCNA level), SDN (seems very interesting to me) and Network Automation using python. I am actively looking for some small projects as well which aggregates all my knowledge.

Now, I am looking for a Summer Internship where in I can execute my knowledge in Networking (practically) and Fiber technologies (ISP?).

I just wanted to get an idea about the Internships. I mean what are skills Companies look for? What skills should an ideal candidate acquire/have so that one might accept him/her as an Intern.

I searched for internships related threads and found nothing on this forum and thus wanted to start a new one :)

I don't think we have internships in the industry as much as we have entry-level jobs. You could start just about anywhere and things will move very quickly if you are willing to do the work.

What city are you in and are you able to travel to other cities?

Hi @deanwebb, currently I am located in Rochester-New York. I might be able to move to other cities for an internship :)

I am willing to work hard.

http://www.indeed.com/q-Network-Engineer-l-Rochester,-NY-jobs.html can help you. Engineer 1, other entry-level jobs would be what you're looking for. Again, we don't see internships all that often in networking. The start is with entry-level jobs and the skills mount up quickly.

Exactly. We just hire. Internships in this line of work, I have never seen.
