Title: Innovation

Any ideas about innovation for networking? Maybe new tools that make installation of cables easy, speed up router etc

A slap-o-matic. Installs on the top of the monitor or screen. Whenever someone calls in with an idiotic question, we admins can send a command to the slap-o-matic API to smack the caller upside the head.

Love brainstorming... make a few joke suggestions, and then a real idea manifests itself...

How about software vendors include a firewall connection utility? A little app that tries to reach all necessary ports on a destination machine. If there's a failure, the app reports which port needs to be opened. Put that in an email to your firewall guy, and he'll be overjoyed to fix the rule for your app.

I'm keen on finding a way for innovation in the networking area.

A way in which I do this at the moment is not that great but goes along something like this:

- keep checking new releases or planned release to see what features are available, and I think how they would apply to the business, how we can benefit or how they can make our life easier

- see what problems are currently there and google for ways to resolve or alleviate

- browse good forums like networking-forums.com and ask questions which may seem silly to some, at the risk of online reputation being degraded.

Does anyone have any better suggestions? :)

read lots of cutting edge IT articles on news sites that cater to such enthusiasts, as well some of the more mainstream sites sometimes have good info too.

This really needs to be a thing.  :glitch:

Well there are some interesting innovations that have some relevance to networking (but networking is just a small subset); for example docker management platform like Kubernetes has some implications on the network design.
