Title: The DJ Thread
Post by: NetworkGroover on April 11, 2016, 10:10:04 AM
Requested to join as well, though, between you guys and me... I've been falling in love with DJing more than networking lately....

I gave all that stuff up with kids and work.... Got too old to stumble out of clubs at 5am carrying my crate.... Yes real vinyl, I'm old LOL.

Haha.... yeah the only reason I'm doing it now is thanks to digital DJing... all I have to lug is a single backpack that carries my laptop and dj controller.  Software-defined DJing for the win! ;)

No way! When I see laptops in a DJ booth I'm thinking, who are you chatting to? (facebook, google hangout) :)
When I turn up to play I'm just carrying my headphones and some USB sticks. I've been to gigs with my friends that play in England (some of them since the 80s) and they still carry CD cases and vinyl (depends on the event), but most just use USB now. I learned on vinyl but only back in 2007. I recently picked it up about 2013 when I bought equipment.

I've stayed away from controllers really. I think you really have to know them inside and out otherwise you may as well be using legacy type stuff like single decks whether usb / CD or vinyl.
I have a few mixes up here: https://soundcloud.com/tonypearce-music/tracks

Split topic from LinkedIn discussion so as to be a better format for the discussion of DJ science.

@Dieselboy, clicked on the first one, and I'm in da groove. I really like house and that drum'n'bass feel to the first track hits the spot.

Goa trance, house, lounge, chill, liquid drum'n'bass are what I usually reach for when I gots to have some electronica.

"liquid drum'n'bass" - Did some Youtube exploration. Not bad, but not my favorite music.

Not my favorite, either, but there's some good stuff out there, especially if it incorporates a 60's theme. Think "Ocean's 11" soundtrack. It can be music to do cool stuff to.

And if anyone wants to do a mix incorporating any/all of a Chris Joss album, let me know when it's ready. I particularly like his "The Man with a Suitcase". 8 tracks of 60's-feeling cool. Tie it all together with some deep bass lines, and I'm all good with that.

Sorry Dean - my usual thread highjacking - shame on me.

You're pretty spot-on Diesel.  Thankfully for me I was interested in DJing back in the Vinyl and CDJ days, but never pursued it until now, so all I know is digital. You can do so much on digital controllers and actually you can make it really, really lame/boring for yourself with cue points, beatgrid, and the "sync" button.  At that point you literally just hit play and the BPM is already synced - but that does free you up to add interesting effects, have more time to control basslines, etc.  I made sure to learn how to play with the Sync button off (manual beatmixing) recently in case I run into songs that don't fit so nicely into beat grids (Mashups, rock, etc. - non electronic stuff)... but I won't deny the Sync button makes your mix very, very tight - no nudging needed.

There's VERY little difference between someone rocking a Traktor S2 (People have asked me if it's a DJ Hero controller  ::) ), and those big Pioneer CDJs that are the club norm.  The hilarious thing is, those CDJs you see - people usually throw a USB in them and it's the EXACT same thing as digital DJing - just much more of a PITA to move around.  The only downside to the S2 is the displays aren't directly on the device, so I spend more time than I want to looking at my laptop to beatmix, etc - it's also funny that people find that lame, but it's perfectly ok for a DJ to stare at their decks that have the screens built directly on them ;P  It's the same thing.  Now you see big names like Carl Cox rocking digital DJ controllers - it's definitely where things are headed, but it still has nothing Vinyl for scratching, or for Stems/beatpads that you see being used in tandem for live music production - now that's sick.

And music.. oh man music.  Just organizing/labeling your music is a job.

I've come to the realization that just throwing all house music into a "House" category does not do it justice at all.  So now I'm trying to educate myself on the different types of house....  at least now I have Deep House figured out and broken out.. but have a hell of a hard time distinguishing between the rest (Future, Tech, Progressive, etc.)

So yeah, when you talk about those different types of EDM... you have to listen to a lot of music - there's good/bad songs in each genre.  I've discovered I like a pretty big spectrum.

Oh - and I listened to your first mix - nice Deep House sound.  I followed you.  If you have the time/motivation, have you tried broadcasting on Mixify?  That's what I do now - only because my Traktor software has it built-in.  Some good DJs there play regularly - it's like getting into a club/music festival for free.  Sounds like you do actual gigs now and then, so dunno if Mixify would be of interest to you, but there's some great folks spinning there from time to time.

Cheers guys. I'm still working on improving but recently been happy with my mixes.

I have the same at home. 2 x cdj900nexus and a djm850 mixer. I have like the bottom you can get that is still pretty much the same as you would get in a club. It does make it feel easier when you get up there and it's 90% the same as what you play on in doors. It's not cheap though but it's another hobby  :awesome: My best buy though was the Yamaha HS8 speakers (not HS80). I never want to part with these.

I've had house music exposure since I was about 4 or 5 years old. My mums friends were / are DJs, one of her friends opened ministry of sound in London and had residency. Funnily enough, Carl Cox grew up a few streets away from my home in Carshalton, England.

I too like Liquid dnb; Commix, High Contrast, Nookie

Ministry of Sound have been pretty consistent at "doin' it rite". I can also count on most Hed Kandi releases "from before the art changed."

I didn't really get into electronica until my second stint as a teacher, when a student recommended Tiësto, Paul Oakenfold, and George Acosta to me. After that, I wandered into Goa Trance on my own, by way of Natacha Atlas and this one Talvin Singh mix of her track "Duden."

Paul Oakenfold used to play in the local town hall (Wallington) before he was famous (apparently..). I know Carl Cox used to play locally before he was famous also. But I'm not old enough to have seen any of that unfortunately.

If any of you can locate this original vinyl I'm after a copy, but don't want to pay $600+ for it:

Actually, just had a look, there's one there for $165AUD now. This is tempting. I want to frame it and put it on the wall:

I want to buy a track but it's only on itunes and literally nowhere else. Literally nowhere else except in crap quality.

I don't want to install itunes. Is that the only way to buy things from itunes is installed their app?

Diesel - I think you have to use the iTunes app as an application in order to buy(They tie the purchase to your account which is handy if you need to re-download or download on another device) - not sure though.

Try Beatport maybe?

Done another mix at the weekend. Think there's a bit of everything in this mix.

Can anyone tell me why shortly after pressing "play" on the deck, that I get calls and/or messages on just about every application going. I cut the mix short, but there's always next weekend.

One way to cut down on calls and/or messages is to turn off one's phone and all other processes that involve messaging. Really does a good job at cutting down on interruptions, I've discovered.

And, in Australia, the sharks are all venomous, can jump out of trees, and drive land trains. Be extra careful!

@AspiringNetworker - just bought myself some VMODA LP2 headphones. Tried my friends at the weekend and it feels easier to mix on compared to my HD25's. I wanted an over-ear headphone to help block out noise. The HD25s are hard to concentrate on sometimes.

Can't believe I hadn't followed you yet on Mixcloud - fixed that (I'm DJ 3L3V8).

I have vmoda headphones and love them - but yes, I do definitely take them off frequently - they not only can get warm, but I like to have my full attention/hearing ability on my incoming mix.

Speaking of mixes, I had a, what I would call successful anyway, mix I recently uploaded - Top 100 in multiple genres:
https://www.mixcloud.com/3l3v8/dj-3l3v8-electro-mixtape-1/ (https://www.mixcloud.com/3l3v8/dj-3l3v8-electro-mixtape-1/)

Also, if you like something a little more chill:

I took an online class on how to edit/level/master recorded mixes using Audacity and it was IMMENSELY helpful...

Sad to say, I seem to be MUCH more interested in DJ stuff than networking lately.... just wondering how long I can keep my job. ;P I've caught my Dad's bug (he's an actual musician) - I rarely even play video games anymore which is UNHEARD of for me... lol.

Upgraded my kit from a Traktor S2 to a Traktor S4, got a really nice pair of Yamaha HS8 studio monitors and loving it.  I now broadcast live regularly on Mixify.com and Slipmat.io.

Dude how great are the HS8 monitors! I've had mine for about 18 months and I love them to bits. Your setup looks good. That's good your dad is a musician!

I have a slot on my friends radio show but I've not yet had the balls to actually do it. I'm playing out tomorrow evening though. Not really had the time to mix much, after I finish work there's not much time until it's too late to make noise. I plan on being on there all day saturday before I play out though. And as it's Friday I'll be on there after dinner after work as well.

Depending on the time you're streaming I'm keen to log on and have a listen.

So I've made a good purchase on the VMODA then? :) They're still in transit from the US. I've also got a DX650 ebay special that's somewhere in the air now I think also coming from the US. (DX was only about $200 USD!)

Thanks for the subscribe :) I did wonder who that was :)

Sorry my response has been terrible lately.

Heh - if I can find spare time I'll accept that challenge - could be fun.. but again.. it seems I never have time lately and I still have a lot of learning to do when it comes to production.  Trying to keep my job and stay married is a challenge enough with the DJ habit alone ;P

Yes - LOOVVVEEE the HS8s... when there are vocals it sounds like someone's in the room with you so crystal clear - it's like listening to completely different music.

Yes definitely think you made a good purchase with VMODA - no complaints with mine thus far outside of the mild heat build-up - use them for pretty much everything.

As an update, a group of folks in LA which is right up the road from me opened a great new site for streaming DJs last July - Grooveo.com.  So now I spin there as they sometimes talk huge clubs into letting them showcase Grooveo's best DJs - so I'm trying to win one of those spots - would be wild to spin in a super club like that.  They had a showcase just last week at Exchange LA (http://exchangela.com/) and have been featured in DJ Mag.

Actually - that first one is super easy - just throw it in with your typical 134(ish) BPM Psy Trance mix...

It's funny - I grew up in the EDM world with Trance... but I don't spin it, and I don't really like it anymore unless it's Progressive Trance.

I've slacked the past few months. Not looking forward to getting back into it as I'll be crap with mixing for a little while unless I'm lucky. The headphones will help with beatmatching but blending tracks together that sound good takes concentration! Although there's no better feeling when you've picked the right tracks and you dont really have to do anything except go with it; because you know it sounds good.

If your ears are getting a bit warm, it might be because the headphones are clamping to your head a bit toooooo tightly. The vmoda instructions advise to forcefully bend them outwards, little by little to reduce the clamping pressure on your nut. Would probably work with other headphones too. I like mine a little bit tight though.

Yet another reason why I'm glad I started in the digital age.  The only thing I'd do with turntables is learn to scratch (Can do it with my controller jog wheels but I think I'd enjoy it more with real vinyl) and use timecode vinyl just for the "real DJ image".  Otherwise, the extra cost involved with that (needles, etc.), the space they take up, and less functionality than I get with my current setup that only cost $800 (Not counting laptop and software, so ok, $2400 total)?  No thanks.

It's just a cash grab on Panasonic's end. I bought my 1210 MK5's for 400 euros a piece back in 2003-2004.  The exact same hardware is now going for more than 2000 euros per unit (new). If prices keep going up I will sell them and find me a pair of Vestax. The only thing I'm still using the turntables for is listening to my collection.

Have you seen the gold plated ones?  Or are those the ones you're talking about?

That's probably the limited edition? These are the new ones, SL-1200G: https://www.engadget.com/2016/09/06/technics-sl-1200g-turntable-available-this-month/

Had my first nightclub experience the other night - man it's so nice to only have to bring a thumb drive and plug it into the club gear and just go - rather than dragging 100s of lbs of gear with me and setup/teardown.

Streamed the set including two people after me on Grooveo.com - if you're interested just go there and search for Live @ Atomic.
Here's the audio recording of my set - it's House and Tech House - moody stuff with a lot of energy

Also for those who like the typical radio Top 40 stuff... I recently did this mix on my new Pioneer gear (XDJ-1000Mk2s and a DJM-2000NXS) - still getting used to it - big change from Traktor on a S4:

Enjoy!

Nice!

I've not played out in a while now - trying to knuckle down and get some exams out of the way  :twitch:

I will check them out later on in the day :)

If you ever want my advice 1. practice, practice, practice, practice, practice. And 2. Carry redundant USBs :) (sort of like active / active - you can put one in each deck :) )

Wait, do you need a heartbeat link between active/active DJ USBs so that they can sync up the beats?

And do active/active USBs support VPN connections through them?

That's kind of how they work  :XD: The deck shows visual indication of the other decks beat to help you; although you should ignore it. It sort of like trying to ride a bike and someone running alongside you, holding you up. You do better on your own once you get the hang of it :) There's an Ethernet cable that links up the decks. If you have more than 2 then you use a hub or home router.

Here's a point for Pioneer - why not use the same Ethernet "port" that Cisco uses on the back of its telephones? Basically a 2-port (or 3-port depending on how you look at it) switch? Because today as it stands, to link everything up you need a messy external switch or router with all the cables dangling. Instead, if each deck (and mixer now!) has 2 Ethernet ports on the back, then you can link deck 1 to deck 2, deck 2 to the mixer and mixer to deck 3 and youre done! Why haven't they done it yet? You pay around $3k per deck and you need a $20 switch to get your stuff linked up  :XD:

Yes sort of  :XD: You can get yourself into a situation where Deck A is playing a track off the USB plugged into Deck B and Deck B is playing a track off usb connected into Deck A  :XD

Amazing... can you create QoS policies based on the artist?
